During the midst of a 16 year career with Air Traffic Control and Support Services at both Melbourne and Brisbane airports, I experienced an epiphany and decided to explore a change of direction in my life. I began training in the counselling field in January 2000. I completed a Diploma of Counselling and Communication with Australian College of Applied Psychology (ACAP) in December 2001. I then went onto university and completed post graduate studies in counselling exiting with a Bachelor of Counselling from the University of New England (UNE) in Armidale NSW.

In January 2007 I re-enrolled at UNE once again and in November 2008 successfully completed my Master of Counselling.

Like a lot of people, in my lifetime I’ve had my ups and downs resulting at times in the need to consult a counsellor for assistance with my life direction. In my first ever appointment, the counsellor sat eating watermelon from her lunchbox as she watched the clock! This is a strong example of what should not happen in the counselling room!

To me, every client is special, every client is an individual, and every client has many gifts to share.

In my role as a counsellor, I strive to live by the following powerful statement:

“The greatest good you can do for another is not just to share your riches, but to reveal to him his own”

Benjamin Disraeli, 1804 -1881, British Statesman and Literary Figure

It is worth noting how Benjamin Disraeli phrased his statement - he used the word “reveal”, he did not say find, or get, he used the word “reveal” because he understood that we all have the same riches within us, we simply must learn how to remove the shroud which obscures them from our view.

As we walk though this life, I believe it is great to share our riches, our abundance in all the forms which our abundance manifests. It is our responsibility and purpose to also help reveal to our brothers and sisters of this world how they may reveal their own riches.

How do we help others to reveal their own riches? I believe the first step of course is to be aware of our own riches and to live as an example. The next step is to be there to answer questions when asked, and to ask questions to provoke thought and awareness and to offer guidance and support as each person embarks upon their journey to themselves.

For when awareness is created within someone, they will begin to ask questions and as they ask questions their awareness will increase and the veil will begin to be lifted, and the riches which they possess and have always possessed - will begin to be revealed.

In counselling, the most wonderful thing about helping someone to reveal their own riches, is that our awareness increases and we are rewarded with an even clearer view and understanding of our own riches.

I like to take time to reflect on a daily basis remembering that we are all students and teachers and that these roles often meld together in a day and often they are hard to distinguish. I believe in always being aware of my responsibility in each role and follow through with each always in a spirit of love.

As your counseIlor, I would be honoured to share your journey.
